Say Goodbye to Beardruff: Effective Tips to Prevent and Combat It

Beard dandruff, or beardruff as its commonly known in the beard community, is a nuisance to all beard wearers. Nothing is more embarrassing than looking down at your shirt and seeing it covered in beardruff. Rest assured, you’re not alone. Everyone experiences this throughout their beard journey.

So, what is beardruff and what causes it?

Beardruff is basically the result of a buildup of excess skin cells. This is caused when the skin sheds faster than normal.

So, what causes beardruff?

While there isn’t one single root cause of beardruff, the majority of beardruff comes from one or more of the following: dry skin, microbes and skin sensitivity.

  • Dry Skin - We’ve all experienced dry skin, And oh, that itch. That itch! It felt so good to scratch, but then you’re left with skin flakes all over your shirt. Dry skin can happen at any time but is more prominent during the colder months. It’s caused when you don’t properly maintain your beard and the skin underneath.
  • Microbes - The most common of cause is a fungus/yeast called Malassezia. It feeds on the oil produced by your skin and expels oleic acid. This can trigger a reaction from your body, causing more skin cells to grow.
  • Skin Sensitivity – Sometimes the ingredients in your grooming products don’t mesh with your skin. You may sometimes experience red, itchy, dry flaky skin after trying a new product. This is known as Contact Dermatitis and occurs when body is sensitive to an ingredient.

Now that I know what it is and what causes it, how do I get rid of it?

The good this about beardruff is that it can be easily treated. However, if you are experiencing intense symptoms, consult a medical professional.

  1. Clean Beard, Clean Skin
The first, and most important step, in preventing beardruff is to keep your beard and the skin below it clean. Use a beard shampoo to gently cleanse your beard. Be aure to exfoliate to remove excess skin cells that can cause beardruff. While some beard washes leave your bear feeling stripped of all its moisture. Our shampoo is formulated to cleanse while also replenishing vital minerals and nutrients.

  1. Hydration Is Key

Dry skin is the number one cause of beardruff. Keeping your beard and the skin beneath it moisturized is vital to keeping your skin from dying out and flaking up. We recommend having a beard oil in your daily regimen. Our beard oil is created to moisturize and condition your beard and the skin beneath.

  1. Groom Your Beard
After you’ve cleaned and moisturized your beard, brush/comb it. This helps distribute oils throughout your beard, remove excess skins cells, and stimulate the skin below, which promotes hair growth. Adding in a beard butter or balm really helps lock in moisture, condition the beard, and aid in styling.

Beardruff is a nuisance, but with the right routine and care, its preventable. I hope these tips help you achieve victory in your battle against the enemy, beardruff.
